Orchard Road Living Room Extension has Sliding Door with a Cat Flap
Orchard Road is an Edwardian terraced house that needed a thoughtful transformation to meet the evolving needs of its residents, which happened to include a sliding door with a cat flap. The family’s vision for their new extension was an enclosed kitchen, expanded storage and service areas on the ground floor, and a seamless connection to their beloved garden.
Architect Davide di Martino of Unagru got to work, exploring concepts of spatial compression and expansion. This required innovative glazing solutions that were beautiful and precise, even for the sliding door with a cat flap, which was embedded directly into the glass panel. Our objective was to supply the glazing for a new pavilion room that connects the interior to the lush garden.
The clients selected a Sieger aluminium sliding door system with minimal sightlines. Spanning an impressive 6.5 meters in width and 2.84 meters in height, this three-track sliding door system features two sliding panels and one fixed panel. The minimal 48mm aluminium profiles ensure unobstructed views of the garden while maintaining thermal efficiency and structural integrity. Complementing the sliding door with a cat flap, a frameless fixed structural glass rooflight measuring 3.8 meters by 1 meter was installed above the pavilion room. This rooflight is comprised of three silicone-jointed panes; a wide expanse of glass that floods their living space with light.

“Special considerations were made to accommodate the whole family – even the cat! With a custom cat flap integrated into the sliding door system, Rupert’s morning commute to the garden is now faster than ever.“
This aluminium sliding door with a cat flap features mechanical multi-point locking devices for enhanced security, and the minimal 48mm profiles offer panoramic views with great energy efficiency. Working within the client’s budget, Sieger Systems delivered high-quality solutions without compromising on functionality or aesthetics.
Our collaboration with Unagru exemplifies how thoughtful architecture and precision engineering can rejuvenate a historic residence. By attentively addressing the family’s aspirations and implementing innovative solutions, the project surpassed expectations. The family now enjoys a home that not only meets their practical needs, but brings them joy. The pavilion room has become a focal point of family living – just as we intended!
